Aster CMI Hospital Successfully Performs Rare Minimally Invasive Triple Spinal Decompression in a Single Sitting

Aster CMI Hospital - Bangalore

Aster CMI Hospital has once again demonstrated its clinical excellence by successfully performing a rare and complex triple spinal tandem decompression surgery in a single sitting using Minimally Invasive techniques. This landmark procedure highlights the hospital’s advanced capabilities in neurosurgical care, multidisciplinary expertise, and commitment to delivering life-changing outcomes for patients with complex spinal conditions.

An elderly patient arrived at Aster CMI Hospital with severe and progressive back pain that extended to the lower limbs, along with numbness, walking difficulty, and discomfort in the mid-back region. He also had neck pain with numbness and weakness in his hands. After detailed clinical evaluation and imaging, the patient was found to have a rare condition involving compression of the spinal cord and nerves at multiple levels in the neck, upper back, and lower back regions. He had already tried conservative management and found no relief, with recent worsening in symptoms.

A detailed discussion was held with the patient and this family, considering multiple treatment options including staged surgeries at three spinal levels – due to age and co-morbid conditions. But with newer minimally invasive techniques there was an option of performing all surgeries together as well, thereby reducing the need for multiple surgeries with associated anaesthesia related risks each time.

Given the severity and the need for comprehensive relief, the team performed all decompressions in a single surgical session. The complex procedure involved relieving the pressure on the spinal cord and nerves across all three affected regions and stabilizing the spine to restore function and mobility using highly advanced minimally invasive techniques and state of the art spinal technologies.

Dr. Akshay Hari, Consultant – Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery, Aster CMI Hospital, said “This surgery represents a rare occurrence of multi-level spinal compression successfully managed through meticulous planning and coordinated surgical execution. He added that performing decompressions at three different spinal regions in one sitting requires exceptional precision, timing, and teamwork, which ultimately enables faster recovery and a significant improvement in the patient’s quality of life. Advancements in spinal surgical techniques including highly focused minimally invasive techniques using small 2cm tubes have enabled such procedures to be performed faster and safer, which would have otherwise been deemed unfeasible using conventional approaches. This reduces the overall risk and enhances  outcomes for the patient.”

Dr. Ravi Gopal Varma, Director – Aster Global Institute of Neurosciences & Lead Consultant – Neurosurgery, Aster CMI Hospital, commented,
“This case highlights Aster CMI Hospital’s advanced expertise in managing some of the most complex spinal disorders through a multidisciplinary and minimally invasive approach. Performing three-level decompressions in a single sitting demonstrates our team’s surgical precision, planning, and commitment to patient safety. The outcome reaffirms how newer techniques and innovations in neurosurgery can transform the lives of patients who otherwise face major limitations in mobility and comfort”.

This rare and complex surgery underscores Aster CMI Hospital’s dedication to combining medical innovation with compassionate care, reaffirming its position as one of India’s leading centers for advanced neurosurgery and spine care.
